[e2e] time for a presentation layer?

I wonder if the talk about end-node services are arguments for a
standardized set of presentation layer services. Is it time to do one for
new apps to use? Some of the possible components:

 o absolute reliability
 o encryption
 o compression
 o data-typing (maybe)

Applications could use the functions they want (or not), and the transport
wouldn't have to be burdened with the responsibility of providing these
services where they are not useful.

Such an end-specific layer could also potentially make middle-box meddling
much more difficult.
