[e2e] time for a presentation layer?

I'm not sure I understand the point of this thread.

There are a number of presentation layers in the Internet world.  For 
example, HTML and Telnet.

If I get the drift of this discussion, the idea is to burden TCP stacks 
with some kind of mandated set of optional presentation layers - perhaps 
analogous to what the Bluetooth folks call "profiles".

Assuming that, this is paving the road to hell IMHO.  Building in 
"application semantics" to the standard network system is quite different 
from allowing groups of users to share a common set of protocol libraries 
that they can optionally use.
