It is actually quite easy to find a middle ground.  Posters that post
from multiple email addresses could subscribe with all the email
addresses they want and disable mail delivery in all of them but one
(this is one of the mailman features). Doing this would allow them to
post from any of their email addresses and receive only one copy of the
mailing list emails.  In this way the list could be closed to posting by
subscribers only, and subscribers could still post from multiple
addresses.
