Is there some objective metric one can use to evaluate the goodness
of a network entirely free of middle boxes, or does it ultimately
boil down to a religious argument based on differing faiths, that
cannot be resolved sensibly within the ordinary scope of end2end-interest?

P.S.: Do you run into many radicals who suggest that a middle box
      must or even should be in front of EVERY host in the Internet? 

      It would be like matter & anti-matter, given your argument that
      there should be no middle boxes at all.
