I really second you. I think that real implementations of peer-to-peer 
protocols
are far in advance compared to the academic understanding. However, this is,
from my point of view, quite interesting to have the opportunity to 
work, like
a biologist, on existing entities. But this is another story quite out 
of the scope of this thread.

By the way, in the recent PAM2004 workshop, there was a session on P2P,
and a paper from Izal et al. addressed a BitTorrent analysis:
