IMO, E2E says that E2E can't replace HBH, but not that HBH can't or 
shouldn't exist.

HBH can be important to optimizing the E2E, so long as it operates over 
the correct relative timescales (HBH being faster than E2E, so you don't 
have the two fighting each other).
