Jon and David,

It's even a factor of pi/2 only. The longest arc is the one connecting the
two poles = pi*r (assuming a perfect sphere), any arc longer than that
will have a shorter complement on the other side of the earth). The
distance through the earth between those two points is 2r, and hence the
largest factor between any two points is pi/2.
